So you seek to enter the Domain?

Well, you've come to the right place! :la: On this page, you'll find everything you need to know about how to apply and get involved in DotW!

  • DotW is a closed group with a member cap of 75.
    • DotW will announce openings when the member count drops, though it is currently up to admin discretion when these happen. These openings will be mentioned in advance, so any potential joiners should keep an eye on our journals!
  • We have a minimum age cap of 16 years, simply for the presence of mature themes that often occur in stories and RP.

Application Templates

Here are all the currently existing factions within DotW. Check the group's front page for up-to-date info on which packs are currently accepting new members and links to each pack's culture page.

Your first character must begin as a pack wolf. After a full season (3 months) you may bring in more characters, including Loners and Other Creatures.

Download the appropriate template and add your character to it! Make sure to fill out the name and palette and be familiar with the character design rules below!

Character Biography

Once your character is on their reference sheet and ready to be uploaded, please put the following in the artist comments of your deviation:

Name: (What is your character’s name?)
Age: (Please use the simplified form of their age [pup, juvenile, etc] instead of the number. Pup = 0-3 months, Juvenile = 3-6 months, Young Adult = 6 months to 2-3 years, Adult 4-8 years, Aged Adult 9-11 years, or Elder = 12+ years)
Gender: (Biological sex and identity, if distinct - pronouns can be added too!)
Height:  (See character creation section below; pups and juveniles may be below standard heights but should grow into an appropriate bracket)
Weight: (See character design rules below; pups and juveniles may be below standard weights but should grow into an appropriate bracket)
Build: (Describe the general body type of your character. No need to go into fur pattern, we can see that from the picture!)

Territory: (If they are in a pack, which pack? Loners/creatures do not require an official territory but their favourite area may be listed)
Family: (Do they have any family in DotW? If not, you may include NPC family who are not located in the Domain, if marked as NPCs!)
Rank: (If in a pack, what rank are they? If they're a loner, leave blank) *Note: all new members start out as Omega's without tasks

Personality: (200 word minimum)

Pre-Group History: (100 word minimum, unless the character was born to group characters in which case Pre-Group should be a brief explanation of the parents and pup's birth)

Group History: (This comes through RP! Keep a log of your interactions, drawings, bones, etc here)

Other: (Anything else you’d like to add)

Star! IMPORTANT Star!

  • All character ID info must be included in the description itself!
    • You can include more, and/or link to a sta.sh/doc with additional expanded information, but you must keep the above minimum information listed and easily accessible in the App description!
  • Do NOT rename the tabs!
  • "Group History", "Family", and "Other" are the ONLY sections that can be replaced with a link!

Biographical Information - Details

NAMES
  • Names may not be held or reserved. If two people want the same name, it is entirely dependent on who submits their character and payment first!
    • Exception: if players pay for a pup in a litter, they can reserve the name when they pay.
  • Wolves can have the same name as another character no longer in the group.
  • Wolves can have the same name as active characters if they go by an entirely different name or nickname primarily (for instance, if two wolves are named Charlotte but one goes exclusively by Charlie).
AGE
  • In real life, wolves are pups until roughly 6 months old, and juveniles until roughly a year. In order to keep the Domain flowing, we have halved this time to reach young adulthood. Ages are distributed as such:
Pup = 0-3 months
Juvenile = 3-6 months
Young Adult = 6 months to 2-3 years
Adult = 4-8 years
Aged Adult = 9-11 years
Elder = 12+ years
  • Pups should age up to juvenile approximately 3 real-life months after birth, and similarly, juveniles should age up to young adult after approximately three real life months. After a wolf reaches young adulthood, you may age them up at whatever speed you deem appropriate.
    • If bringing in a pup character who is NOT from a DotW litter adoption, you MUST have a Guardian. Please consult the DotW Handbook for requirements on Pups and Guardians.
GENDER
  • DotW is open and welcoming to all expressions of gender identity. Please inform us of whatever pronouns your wolf may use, the gender they identify as, and other relevant information.
    • You must list the biological sex of your character somewhere on their app sheet.
HEIGHT AND WEIGHT

Note that height and weight are measured in inches (00") and pounds (lbs). Please note that wolves in the universe of DotW are simplified, with no distinct species (timber, gray, European, etc.) - all are simply wolves! These are the average heights and weights for wolves.
  • Males: 32"-36" (though unusually small males may be only 30")
  • Females: 30"-34" (though unusually large females may be 36")
    • Characters cannot exceed 36" unless they have gigantism. They may be as small as 28" if considered undersized, and may be ever so slightly shorter if they have dwarfism. Any mutations must be purchased.
  • Weight range should fall between 60 lbs and 120 lbs. Based on size, a wolf may be as little as 50 lbs and as heavy as 130 lbs. We understand that overweight and underweight wolves do exist, but a reason must be run by the admin team before making a character fall outside of these limitations.
Ratio:
30'' = 60 lbs (50-70 lbs range)
31'' = 70 lbs (60-80 lbs range)
32'' = 80 lbs (70-90 lbs range)
33'' = 90 lbs (80-100 lbs range)
34'' = 100 lbs (90-110 lbs range)
35'' = 110 lbs (100-120 lbs range)
36'' = 120 lbs (110-130 lbs range)

Females will generally hit the average to lower range, while males will more likely hit the average to higher range. Anything above or below the basic range would be considered overweight or malnourished, respectively.

BUILD
  • Describe what your character's build is like. Terms such as lean, athletic, broad, stocky, short, tall, angular, etc. can be used, or more descriptive paragraphs about areas that are more muscular or toned - you can also just describe a character's build as average!
FAMILY
  • Any characters who are part of DotW should be listed here. Linking their application sheets is optional.
  • Wolves cannot enter the Domain with a mate, unless the mate was an NPC from before their time in the Domain and is dead or separated.
  • NPC family members (characters who are not in the Domain, and are not played by people) are not permitted in the group. They are either alive beyond the Domain, or dead, and cannot be referenced as alive within a standing Domain pack.
    • NPC families can be listed on your application sheet as long as they are marked as NPCs!
    • Should potential, personal plotlines involve NPC family, you MUST note the group to approve such a plot! Ultimately, though, we want you to plot with your fellow Domainians. The same goes for family adoptions - like any other adoption, they must be approved by the admin team!
PERSONALITY
  • Personality should be well-rounded, including both positive and negative traits - even in villainous or angelic characters! Nobody is perfect, and having a bit of imperfection makes characters more relatable and believable!
  • We do ask that characters are more than just one main trait! Nobody is defined solely by a single personality trait, and we have seen a lot of characters in the past whose only defining trait is flirtatiousness, sex drive, aggression, etc. It is acceptable to have traits like this, but a character needs to be more than this to be accepted!
PRE-GROUP HISTORY
  • Character backstories should explain where they came from. What was their early life like? Their family? A potential pack they grew up in? What drew them to the Domain? How did they end up in the pack you have chosen?
    • Please note that characters CANNOT come from in-game packs without discussing with the administrative team! It's best to come from outside of the Domain!
  • Character backstories featuring triggering or mature content will be carefully and critically evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the staff. Some characters with these backstories may not be permitted in the group for the sake of community safety and welfare.
    • Backstories of this nature, if approved, must possess proper trigger warnings.
  • Backstories CANNOT feature humans! In DotW, there are no humans.
  • There are some old hat backstories we're hoping to see less of in future characters. We won't prevent these backstories, but strongly encourage something a bit more creative.
    • Characters whose parents/pack/friends were killed by loners or an invading evil pack.
    • Characters bred to be unstoppable warriors.
GROUP HISTORY
  • On your application sheet, you may want to keep a running list of art and RPs your character has been involved in, or a link to a separate document! This does not have to be filled when your character enters the group.
OTHER
  • Trivia and other information, such as likes and dislikes, can be included here!

Character Creation

- Overview -

  • Only wolves and the approved Other Creatures (see list below) may be characters. Wolf-hybrids (i.e. wolfdogs, coywolves, cross-species abominations) are not permitted.
  • Characters cannot be fan-based. You can take inspiration from tropes, but you cannot too closely resemble specific characters from shows/games/movies. We don't want to see Balto, Ghost, or Bolt running around here!
  • Characters are not permitted magical or unnatural powers. They might believe they have powers, but cannot actually have powers.
    • The same goes for dreams! They may interpret their dreams as visions, but these are not actual visions - just dreams!

- First Characters -

  • New members start with only one character, which must be a pack wolf! After a season (3 months) you may bring in more characters, including Loners and Other Creatures.
  • First characters cannot have mutations or accessories. Mutations and accessories cost our in-game currency, Bones, and thus cannot be purchased when first entering the group.

- Other Characters -

  • After a three-month wait period between submitting your first and second characters, there is a one-month wait period between any other characters submitted to the group.
    • The exception to this rule is litter tryouts, which can be applied for by members at any time.
  • Each member may have up to 10 active characters at any time. The first and second are free, after that new characters will cost in-game points called bones. You will also have to prove that your other current characters have been active within the past three months.
  • Members may not have more than 3 characters in a single pack at any given time. Alphas reserve the right to limit it further based on demand for their respective packs - if you have questions, please feel free to reach out to the respective alpha.

  • Players are only permitted ONE "Career Loner" at a time. Career Loners are defined by having no desire or plans to join a pack at any point in the near future. Temporary loners (moving between packs, plot-related lonership, retirement-related plans) are permitted on a case-by-case basis but may be subject to rejection if Loners is bordering on its number cap.
  • If you change the design of an active character, you MUST note the group to have the new design approved before implementing the change.
  • For Bones costs and restrictions on new characters, rank ups, mates, litters, accessories, faction changes, and tasks - see Bones.

- Application Art and Design Guidelines -

Staff is always available to review designs via note to the group!

REQUIREMENTS
  • App art must be drawn by you! The art cannot be a photo-manipulation, commissioned artwork, or traced from a reference!
  • Your character must be fully within the confines of the boxes' borders. Do not overlap the borders, or go beyond into the other boxes or background.
  • The main box's colors must NOT be adjusted, have textures added, or feature a background.
    • Text blurbs, scar highlights, gradient details, etc. are permitted in the main box and extras box, as long as they do not overlap or pass the borders.
    • The extras box can also feature a background, but the main box cannot.
  • Your character's name must remain primarily in the name box. If the chosen font features letters that swoop below the baseline (like p, g, y, etc.) the "tails" of the characters may emerge from the box.
  • Dark outlines or drop shadows are permitted (providing they remain within the box) in order to allow a character to pop from their background, particularly when their coats blend with the app boxes. Drop shadows or outlines can also be used on the palette below.
  • You are NOT required to use the extras box or put your character's medallion on the app - it is your choice.

GUIDELINES

Visual aid provided, but clearer definition is provided in the text below!

DotW Marking Guide by Ramala

FUR COLOR AND MARKINGS
  • Color. Coat color ranges from almost pure white through various shades of blond, cream, tan, reddish, and ochre to grays, silvers, browns, and blacks. Gray or mid-tone wolves are most common, while all black and all white wolves are rarer, with black more common than white.
    • Colors shouldn't be too saturated, and you may be asked to desaturate characters upon review if too brightly or unnaturally colored.
    • Color combinations should not be too unrealistic or high contrast, and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Markings. Please follow the guidelines for markings, using the generalized chart provided above. The admin team reserves the right to ask for alterations to be made, should it not fit the DotW guidelines.
    • Ticking is permitted. It should not look like spots, and should not be uniform. It must cover the full pelt or specific range by other color breaks (mostly shoulders and back).
      • Freckle-like markings on the cheeks/muzzle is accepted.
    • Intricate, unnatural markings are not permitted. This includes stripes, swirls, symbols, and zig-zag markings.
    • No domestic dog-like markings. This includes spots and patches, piebalds, rosettes, and merle coloration.
    • No high-contrast 'toe socks', 'wristbands', or 'gloves'.
    • Markings should be symmetrical, and asymmetrical markings will likely not be allowed in the group. These markings will be looked over on a case-by-case basis.
    • No excessive white covering. Going gray with age is not considered white marking.
    • No "border" markings (thin strips of color that look too much like outlines around larger markings, typically darker or lighter than the colors on either side).
FUR STYLES
  • No large hairdos. Small hair tufts are allowed but nothing... extreme. (Example)
    • Hairdos that cover the eyes will be asked to trim down.
  • Moderate feathering on the legs is allowed, but shouldn't drag the ground.
EYES
  • Irises can be variations of yellow, gold, amber, brown, green, hazel, blue, or gray.
    • Bi-colored eyes are not permitted!
  • Sclera should be white or close to white, and cannot be an outlandish hue (unless they are a lighter shade of the iris). Sclera cannot be black.
  • Pupils should be black or very dark, unless the character is blind or has an eye injury.
OTHER FEATURES
  • No “beauty marks” or “moles” are permitted on a wolf’s face or anywhere else on the body. Moles are not generally present in wolves save for extenuating/health-related circumstances.
  • Noses and paw-pads should be black or very dark, unless they are albino. Lighter-colored paw pads are permitted on very light colored wolves but should never be lighter than the wolf's fur.
  • Mutations such as albinism, hyperdontia, etc. are permitted as long as evidence exists of real-world wolves possessing them. Mutated characters may not exceed 20% of total group characters.
SCARRING
  • Scars must be purchased using bones, prior to the character's entry, if entering the Domain with scars. Scars, of course, can be purchased later for bones as your character's story develops.
  • Characters cannot enter the Domain with an injury too unrealistic to survive in the wild. If you are uncertain as to whether the injury you want to give your character is allowed, please note the group! Injuries received in RP that are severe should also be approved by admins prior to altering characters. The following are not permitted.
    • Severe head or jaw injuries
    • Multiple missing or broken limbs
    • Severe burns
    • Items embedded in flesh
    • Exposed skeleton

A member may dispute any of these rules but they must use a real wolf photo and/or research in order to back up their argument. The admins will deliberate these on a case-by-case basis.

 - Other Creatures -

Though DotW is primarily a wolf group, we have a number of other playable species!

Approved Creatures:
  • Bears (Black, Brown, and Grizzly)
  • Predatory Cats (Bobcats, Lynxes, and Mountain Lions)
  • Foxes (Red and Gray)
  • Canadian/Northern US Mustelids (wolverines, badgers, otters, skunks, others)
  • Other Critters: Virginia Opossums, porcupines, raccoons
  • Members may petition to have other species added to the list, however, the animal should be able to evade or challenge a wolf and not simply be prey. Acceptable Other Creatures must follow these guidelines:
    • They CAN be from the coniferous or deciduous biomes of the Northern U.S and Canada (Not the tundra, tropics, oceans, or deserts)
    • They CAN be either a predator or tree-dwelling animal which can stay out of the reach of a hunting wolf.
    • They CANNOT be a herbivorous grazer (deer, buffalo, moose, things like this).
    • They CANNOT be a coyote or other member of the Canis genus. (i.e. nothing that could successfully crossbreed with a wolf)
  • Other Creatures must still conform to character design guidelines but remain within the size parameters of their species. (i.e. color, height, and weight must still be realistic to their species, not wolves)
  • Other Creatures may not join a pack, although their personal homeland/territory may overlap with pack territory.

I've Made An App - Now What?

:star: What can I do while waiting for an opening?

  • Read the Rules. Seriously, they're there for a reason. Read through DotW's rules, bones information, and this guide! Being able to understand and follow these rules are imperative. People who do not follow the correct joining procedure or submit incomplete applications will be declined entry to the group and advised to reread the group journals in order to join.
  • Be Mature. Yeah, we know, duh! This sounds pretty obvious, right? Well, it's a bit more involved, so read up! Your behavior during and prior to applying to DotW is taken into account. If you have a history of harassment, hostility, or general immaturity, this will hurt your chances of being allowed to join the group. Showing a disregard for the rules, unwillingness to cooperate, or lack of consideration for others' feelings is unacceptable. DotW is a very small community and as such, it is imperative that members be able to get along and settle all conflicts honestly.
  • Read about the packs! Whichever faction you plan to join, make sure to read up on it! Each pack has a unique culture and that should be taken into account in your character's history. For example, if you wanted to join Vektren, where sacrifice is an integral part of their religion and society, it would not make sense to play a wolf openly opposed to such practices. Characters do not always have to agree with the customs of their pack, but neither should the culture they live in be ignored.
  • Don't harass members or staff about potential openings. Watch the journals and be patient! Openings are not predictable, and harassment doesn't make an opening come any sooner!
  • Practice! Continue to work on art and writing - the admin team loves to see an active gallery, even if it's not related to DotW! Seeing a gallery that shows active writers and artists proves to us that you're capable of joining an active group like DotW!
:star: There's an opening! Now what?

  • Follow the instructions provided in the Character Creation section of the handbook and this journal! Applications that do not meet the standard requirements will be rejected from the group and asked to try again when their app contains the proper information.
  • Be thorough and concise. Although 200 words is the personality minimum, and 100 words for the history minimum, we strongly recommend writing more than this. Writing a well-rounded character takes more than a few paragraphs! On the flip side of that, don't be too repetitive or contain too many tangents. You don't need every detail of a character's life written out, but more than just the bare minimum!
  • Make the character dynamic. In the A/LRPG world, every character is a main character. Though it is often tempting to minimize your character's weaknesses, in the end this leads to flat story lines and Mary-Sueing. Stay true to character. Remember that even generally positive traits can be negative in certain situations. And likewise, negative traits can manifest in positive ways! Write personalities with a mixture of good and bad traits, and give your character room to grow as they explore the Domain.
  • Don't rely on disabilities to be special. Crippled legs, giant scars, albinism, a split-personality - these are all fun traits to give a character! But they should not form the basis of your wolf's persona. Don't rely on purely luck-of-the-draw afflictions to make your character interesting! If the only defining trait is an illness or injury, we recommend adding more depth to the character.
    • Similarly, don't rely on traumatic backstories. Wolves can be interesting even if they come from a happy home they left willingly and on good terms!
  • Note that the following things do NOT impact your ability to join:
    • Artistic skill - DotW welcomes all skill levels. We're here to help and encourage one another, regardless of experience!
    • Popularity - Whether you have one or one-thousand watchers, it doesn't matter! Your behavior and activity are the only important things.
:star: I've been accepted! Now what should I do?

  • Be active! Everyone's participation matters! You don't have to be a social butterfly, or an art machine, but in order for you and your characters to connect to others, it's important to stay involved! Join in on group plots, RP with someone new, check out the posts of your fellow members!
  • Look around the Discord server! This is a good place to get familiar with the other members, find partners to RP and do art with, or get inspired! Here you can also ask questions about what other characters are like, how you can work together in your pack, and so on!
  • Continue reading about your pack and the rules! Seriously, you need to be familiar with the rules and guidelines for the Domain. Familiarize yourselves with the Bones system, the rules for the group and Discord, etc.

Deep breath! You're almost at the bottom! While meeting the Mighty Needs, and avoiding the Old Hats certainly helps, these remain suggestions and not requirements. It is nothing more or less than a collection of archetypes and traits that are either too common or not common enough in the current group population.

A Mighty Need

There are a few archetypes missing in DotW!
  • Chandor Elk Totems and Owl Totems
  • Fellfang Sages and The Hunt
  • Xassa Su'en

Old Hat

There are some things we're seeing quite a lot of....
  • Backstories involving the characters' family/pack/friends being killed by loners.
  • Characters which defy and/or disdain the culture of their pack with no apparent motivation.
  • Characters bred/trained to be unstoppable warriors.
  • Vektren wolves who fall in love with outsiders.
  • Vektren wolves more inclined to break rules than follow them.
  • Career Omegas (Wolves which never surpass the "omega" rank)
  • Wolves whose only defining trait is flirtatiousness and sex drive.
  • Characters with gigantism.

So I read through the Handbook, and I saw that your first character could enter eith two tiny scars, or one moderate scar. If your character has a moderate scar that renders them half-blind, would that be acceptable? Or would that be something that needs to be purchased with bones, since it affects that character beyond aesthetic purposes?

(I'm hoping I'm wording this correctly – sorry for any confusion!)
